I N S I Dli: FA€ IS- w II AT YOU

ABOUT What you cani see in

No sound business man likes
to buy a pig in a poke, but
that's exactly what he must
do when he buys a piece of
upholstered furniture. The
leather which covers the
chair or sofa you buy Is the
sealed bog. What's Inside? You don't know and
we, who hove been In the business for many years,
can't tell by LOOKING at the finished piece if the
inner construction is substantial. Only after we have
opened up a sofa or chair or have seen it made can
we tell if the upholstered piece Is good or not.

What are you to do, then? Does this mean that

buying upholstered furniture is a gamble? The gam-
ble in buying upholstered furniture is in buying on
price alone or from a manufacturer whose name is
unknown.

Upholstered furniture can be built to last twenty
years or to last less than o year. It all depends on
the workmanship and materials employed. Believing
that you prefer buying good upholstered office fur-
niture, we give you on the following page, the inside
facts regarding good upholstering. When you buy
Sikes upholstered ofRce furniture you know that you
are getting the best possible, furniture that will give
long, lasting satisfaction. The inside facts shown on
page 3 may be considered as a guide by which other
upholstered furniture may be judged.

WHEN YOU BUY FROM

ESt

^ OUGHT TO KNOW

^ UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE

FRAMES. As you know, an

upholstered piece starts with

a wooden franne. While soft

woods are available, Sikes

frames are made of hard

wood, either birch or mople.

The lumber we buy is "firsts."

This means that the grain is

straight and that there are no structural defects. Our lumber

is kiln dried in our own kilns. That assures you it will not

warp or crack.

JOINERY. The squeak in most
upholstered furniture comes
from loose joints. This won't
happen with Sikes furniture be-
cause all joints are double dowelled. In addition, the joint
is reenforced by hand fitted, glued and screwed corner
blocks. Sikes joinery is far different from the joinery of those
manufacturers who merely nail or screw their frames together.

WEBBING. The base on which
the upholstering rests is made
of interlaced jute webbing.
Sikes uses the heaviest jute
webbing available and basket weaves the webbing as closely
as is possible. Beware of furniture that uses metal bars
instead of webbing. When springs touch metal there is
bound to be noise.

SPRINGS* The springs we use
are double coned, oil tempered
and japanned. Our springs are
longer and therefore have
more coils than cheaper springs
which are available. To keep the springs in an upright posi-
tion, each spring is tied and knotted eight times along the
top circumference. It is because Sikes ties and knots each
spring eight times that the springs remain upright and in
position for the life of the piece.

FILLING. There are a num-
ber of vegetable products
which are used as filling for
cheap upholstered furniture.
Sikes used only pure, curled,
sterilized hair. The permanent resiliency of hair makes it
the most perfect filling for upholstered furniture. This hair
filling is closely quilted to the burlap which covers the springs
so that it is always evenly distributed.

MUSLIN COVERING. After
the hair filling is applied, a
muslin cover gives form and
trim appearance to the piece.

Without a muslin undercovering, furniture is cheaper in price

but soon becomes lumpy in appearance.

COVER. All leather used for

Sikes lounge furniture is cut

from full size steerhides. In

order to use only that portion

of the hide which is unmarked

by brands or barbed wire, SNces discards over

a quarter of every hide. This small detail is one

of the many niceties which gives Sikes furniture the character

and quality which it possesses.

WORKMANSHIP. The skill of
Sikes upholsterers is equal to the
quality of materials employed In
making Sikes furniture. The years
of experience which our men have
had plus constant supervision re-
sult in the finest upholstered fur-
niture to be found in this country.

WEIGHTY problems are best discussed
when businessmen are at ease. A lounge
group in a corner of the executive office
will serve this purpose well. In these groups,
spring cushions resting on spring foundations,
are soft enough for comfort, yet stiff enough to
hold their shape after years of service. The
backs are spring filled and high enough to pro-
vide a headrest.

Cushions can be filled with down at an extra
charge.

FIRST impressions are often lasting. Let
the reception room make that first im-
pression a favorable one. These lounge
groups literally welcome your guests. Spring
cushions on spring foundations provide
restful sitting comfort. Backs are filled with
soft pillow springs. The resilient spring
edge at the front of seats avoids annoying
pressure on the underside of one*s legs.

These groups may be upholstered in leather
or in fabric. Down-filled cushions are sup-
plied at an extra charge.

soft down-filled cushions on spring
foundations. The broad arms give
restful support. Sitting in one of
these chairs, you can give full at-
tention to matters at hand without

THESE chairs have almost the loungy
comfort of down cushion chairs, the
smart appearance of fine executive
chairs, all combined with amazingly low
cost. The deep spring seats support you
without physical strain. Soft spring edges
around the seat yield easily with your
weight. To give equal comfort to the back,
the lower portion has a series of pillow
springs that shape themselves to you.

The usual destruction of desk corners by up-
holstery nails is avoided by omitting them
around the seat frame of the swivel chair
and setting them back from the leather on
the arms.

THE charm of Early American furniture was
never better expressed than in the chairs made
for the signers of the Declaration of Inde-
pendence. Sikes brings you a present day inter-
pretation of those famous chairs. We have recap-
tured the simple beauty of proportion and line that
the early cabinetmakers understood so well. The
mouldings of the front legs and arm supports are
fashioned by hand — they are too fine to be exe-
cuted by machine.

The signers' chairs will add charm and livability
to your office. And they will serve to remind you
too, of a dramatic turning point in American
history. I

An interesting fact is that each man was measured
for his chair. The chairs varied in the height of the
seat and the sitting depth, depending on the
stature of the original user.

ANEW discovery in upholstery gives
these chairs amazing comfort. For-
merly a part of the resiliency of
springs and filling was lost because of
stretching the leather cover tightly to
remove the wrinkles. In these chairs how-
ever, the leather is applied without stretch-
ing, giving the materials within their full
natural resiliency. The seat cushion is at-
tached to a brood spring foundation. The
soft back is filled with pillow springs. Once
you have tried these chairs you will agree
that they ore the ultimate in seating
comfort.

THE NEW MODERN

IMIKS IT BKLOXG Ii\
TODAY'S BUSIIVliiSS OFFICES?

Many men have questioned the appropriateness of mod-
ern furniture for today's business offices. It is a reason-
able question, for much of early modern design was
bizarre, impractical and far better suited to the boudoir
than the office. But out of the welter of early experimen-
tation and trial and error has come a modern style of
solid worth — one that you can buy with assurance.

What are the hall marks of this new modern style? First
and foremost it is practical. In creating it, the designer
considers first the prime function each piece must serve
and fashions it to perform that function ably and well.
Next, for its beauty it depends on simple form and pro-
portion with emphasis on beauty of the materials used.
That is why walnut, with its beautiful grain, is eminently
suited to the new modern.

Finally, it has an air of livability about it. The new modern
is essentially honest, sturdy and pleasant. As such it has
a quality of timelessness that is a criterion of all fine fur-
niture of every age.

Modern has emerged from its awkward age and growing
pains to evolve a worthy new style, full of grace. You can
buy the new modern with confidence, knowing that time
ond use will opprove your choice.

HERE is a sturdy pleasant style — one that
will grow on you as you use it. The arms
are broad and comfortable. Seat and

plainness of the back is relieved by two short
welts. They are fine points of design that buyers

ANEW construction at last solves the problem
of how to make cushion seats soft and com-

the cushions rest on a full spring foundation. The
cushions themselves have interiors of curled hair
impregnated in Latex. Since both the cushion and
the foundation are resilient, their combination
achieves unprecedented comfort for cushion seat

WITH POSITIVli: VENTILATION

IS THE SENSATION OF THE YEAR

«

Th« "Hot Seat," literally speaking, is now a thing
of the past, thanks to Sikes' exclusive development,
Koolcushion Seating.

Now you can have chairs with resilient cushions
built into the sect with positive ventilation and
with chair arms and back properly shaped for full
support. Koolcushion is the ONE choir that is cool
and comfortable at all times — in ALL Seasons.

If you've tried moking a wooden seat soft by add-
ing a separate cushion you've found the seat hot,
even in winter. It's airlocked, because the solid
wooden seat permits no air to pass through and
the cushion also retains heat. Then too, the added
cushion raises you in the chair, destroying the ef-
fect which the form-fitting back is supposed to give.

Koolcushion seating has the cushion built down into
the seat. Now you can have the comfort of a
cushion, shaped to the natural curve of your body,
plus the complete natural support of the chair
back and arms that the maker intended you to
have. And that cushion is cool! It is perforated
generously, and those perforations extend all the
way through the seat. Further, the cushion unit is
the new porous Latex, used in all the new stream-
line trains and in all new Pullman cars. It is com-
pletely aerated so that the heat of your body is

not stored up in the cushion, but inittad patiet

ofF quickly.

Remember, Koolcushion chairs do not have merely
flat cushion seats. Instead those cushions are
formed to the natural curves of your body. That
means even weight distribution and all day work-
ing comfort.

Notice how the forward portions of Koolcushion
seats are rolled over the edges. There are no
sharp corners or edges at the front to build up
annoying pressure underneath your knees. Kool-
cushion gives you cool, effortless support without
annoying pressure anywhere.

Koolcushions will outwear any separate cushions
you can buy. That is because they have the finest
material and they rest on a firm wood foundation.

Note how ventilation
goes through-and-
through in this front
view of Sikes new, ex-
clusive Koolcushion.

e

6

There is no flimsy cane to dry out and break
through.

Remarkable too, is the moderate cost of Kool- ft
cushion seating. It will cost you no more than on V
ordinary choir with the loose, unsatisfactory cush-
ion you would have to buy for it.
Don't buy an extra cushion, buy Koolcushion!

(U.S. PATENT No. 1,909,018)

GUARANTEES ALL-DAY COMFORT

THE "FIXED-FLOATING" WAY

THE WRONG WAY

WORKING POSITION

Complefely comforfable sup-
port with form-fitting seat
and bock, avoiding pressure
at any point.

Reasonably adequate support
. . . but often o hard seat
edge innpedes circulatron an
irritates nerves.

RKLAXKD POSITION

The sanrie satisfying comfort as above.
When the back tilts, the seat tilts also, pre-
serving the correct angle. When you lean
back, the front of the seat does not rise
perceptibly, thus allowing your feet to re-
main on the floor. This exclusive tilting
action, which keeps the front of the seat
down, places no irritating pressure beneath
the limbs where arteries and nerves are
near the surface.

Extreme discomfort in this "layback" position.
Though the back tilts, the seat remains rigid (par-
allel to the floor). The angle of the body Is com-
pletely changed and you assume a half lying-down
position, placing an immediate strain on back
and neck, and shoving you out of the chair.

Extreme discomfort in this "feet-off-the-floor"
position. The back tilts but the seat tilts up
in the same degree. As a result, the feet are
hoisted off the floor. This Induces annoying
pressure on the underside of the kn^ees by
impeding circulation and irritating nerve
centers.

KOOIXIJSIIIOX SEATIXG COSTS NO
MORE THAN A CHAIR AND AN EXTRA PAD

Compare the cost of an ordinary chair with a Sikes
Koolcushion chair. You will be annazed that with
its cooler, nnore comfortable features, Koolcushion
costs no more than the ordinary chair with its dis-
comfort-producing pad.
Consider these comfort-making principles:
Koolcushion is cool because of the positive ventila-
tion afforded by the perforated wooden base, the
perforated and aerated Latex cushion and the
perforated leather covering.

Koolcushion is comfortable because the Latex
cushion is form-fitting and resilient. It is built
down into the seat, enabling the back and arm
rests to give the support intended. When you are
raised up, as with an added cushion, both back
and arm rests are out of line and uncomfortable.

BECAUSE IT IS BUILT DOM'X IXTO THE SEAT g

The positive ventilation afforded by the perforations is only one reason
for the comfort of Koolcushion seating. A major reason for the superi-
ority of Koolcushion seating over an extra added pod is the fact that
Koolcushion seating is BUILT DOWN INTO THE SEAT. Furthermore,
the soft rolled edge at the front prevents uncomfortable pressure on the
underside of the knees.

Because it is an integral port of the chair. Koolcushion seating places the
body in proper relation to the back and arms enabling you to obtain the
restful support intended.

SITTING DOWN IN
A KOOLCUSHION

54

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN EXTRA CUSHION
IS ADDED TO ANY ORDINARY CHAIR?

Look at the sketch at the left, obviously exaggerated
to make the difference apparent. You sit so high that
your feet are often raised off the floor.

This causes the hard seat edge to press against the
underside of the knees, inrtpeding circulation and caus-
ing discomfort. Then, too, because you are raised the
arms are too low for comfort and the form-fitting bock
no longer fits.

If to this built-down-in comfort you add the coolness
which the positive ventilation of Koolcushion seating
affords, you have the coolest, most comfortable and
most durable chair you can buy.

WITH "FIXED-FLOATING SEAT"

(U. S. PATENT No. 1.909.018)

THE AIRFORM SEAT. These clerical posture chairs are equipped
with a resilient, porous, moulded Latex cushion seat, which, because of
the extraordinary comfort it affords, permits the occupant to work
"full^ speed ahead" without strain or fatigue. The aerated cellular
cushion (see close-up below) moulds itself automatically to the con-
tour of the body. Regardless of weight you cannot touch bottom;
there is no sagging or displacement.

And because of its porous, cellular construction, the seat gives air-
cooled comfort. Notice particularly that there ore no stiff, hard edges
to compress the nerves and blood vessels, a condition which lowers
clerical efficiency.

WORKING POSITION

THE "FIXED-FLOATING WAY'

Completely comfortable
support with form-fitting
seat and back, avoiding
pressure ai any point.

Extreme discomfort in this "loyback"
position. Though the back tilts, the seat
remains rigid (parallel to the floor). The
angle of the body is completely changed

tion, placing an im-
mediate strain on

RELAXED POSITION

The same satisfying com-
fort! When the back tilts,
the seat tilts also, preserv-

When the bock tilts, the
front of the seat does not

REGARDLESS OF HEIGHT, SIKES POSTURE CHAIRS ARE ADJUSTABLE - BY HAND - TO THE SITTER'S COMFORT

All Slices Pof+Mra Chain are completely adjuitable by simple
hand controls that give true custom-built ease. No tools are
required; no complicated mechanism. While seated in the
chair, you can turn a wheel and raise or lower the back. A
second wheel raises and lowers the seat; another adjustf

the pitch or angle of the back rest ... and a fourth wheel
regulates the spring tension of back and seat. Thus Sikes
Posture Chairs are as comfortable as if custom-built to the
user's individual size.

SWIVEL CHAIRS

The 5-Point Protection which Slices gives to your
office furniture serves a two-fold purpose. It keeps
your furniture looking like new, even after years of
service, and elinninates the use-worn appearance
which is apparent in so nnuch office furniture.
Secondly, it saves you nnoney in a very practical
way. By insulating both chair and desk against
damage, the costs of repairs and refinishing are
effectively reduced. You save nr^oney because the
optional equipment costs less than the refinishing
of even one piece of office fur niture.

^LL BEARlNTSribASTERS

PROTECT FLOORS AGAINST MARS AND SCRATCHES

No longer must costly linoleum, tile or other floors
be damaged beyond repair. These large Bakelite
casters with ball-bearing swivels and graphite im-
pregnated axle bearings glide noiselessly, without
effort and without wear to floors. They ore an-
chored permanently in
the base; therefore,
they never fall out and
they have extraordi-
nary long-wearing
qualities. Because of
their silent, friction-
less action, annoying
squeaks and squeals
are entirely eliminated.

BAKELITE SCUFF PLATES

Protect chair base from scratching and scuffing

The base of a Sikes Swivel Chair cannot scuff
up, splinter or damage shoes and hosieryl It
remains as smooth and attractive as when
new, saving repairs and refinishing because
the Bakelite Scuff Plates successfully resist the
roughest treatment. They harmonize in color
with the wood and are permanently anchored
to the base. Bakelite is superior to metal
which tarnishes and roughens under use. The
burrs so created are even more destructive
than splintered wood. Bakelite is superior to
rubber because rubber absorbs grime and
redeposits it on light shoes. The smudge
which your eraser often makes shows the
effect of a rubber scuff plate on shoes.

nAlVGElt OF INJURY FROM BREAKING SPRINGS

THE TrLTING ACTION

Quiet, Safe Operation — Perfect Balance

All the tilting action is controlled by the
twisting of a rubber cylinder pressed be-
tween two steel cylinders under 40,000
pounds pressure. The rubber is completely
protected against deterioration and should
last for the life of the chair. All the tilt-
ing is in the rubber. There is no hinge
action of nr>etal-to-metal, hence no chance
for squeaks to develop, and no need for
oiling.

66

THE SWI^L ACTION

Self-lubricating — Squeak-proof

The chair swivels on a large lubricated
bearing set into the hub. This bearing
is of porous bronze, impregnated to 30%
with oil and 3% with graphite. It assures
permanent lubrication for the swivel. No
squeals or squeaks — no oil to drop down
on the floor to ruin carpets.

THE SIKILS FLO-TILT MECHANISM

ADJUSTABLE FOR HEIGHT AND TILTING TENSION

You probably hear it In your office — you do in most — that
whining, caterwauling of squeaky chair springs. You may stop
it for a time with oil, only to have it break out again sonnewhere
else. Annoying, isn't it? And unnecessary too, for the Sikes
Flo-tilt Mechanism does away with springs. All the tilting
action is in rubber (see above, left), and all other moving
parts are permanently lubricated (see below, left). It gives
you quiet silent action throughout the life of the chair.

It gives you a new feeling of safety also. For when you tilt back
in a Flo-tilt equipped chair, there is no chance of a spring
breaking and toppling you over backwards. The rubber tilting
device is sure and safe under all conditions. You'll enjoy the
quiet, safe action of the Flo-tilt mechanism.

THE EIGHT JOINTS AROUND THE SEAT FRAME
ARE THE KEYSTONES OF CHAIR STRENGTH.
BE SURE THEY ARE FULLY DOWELLED.

When you buy chairs, you naturally hope that they have rigid,
tight fitting joints, that will hold under oil conditions of use. You
can be sure of it when you buy Sikes chairs, for they are built with
full dowel construction. That is your prinrie guarantee of lifetinrre
service. To quote a Government report, ''The dowel joint is em-
ployed for most of the finest furniture made today,''"^ It is the
only construction that has stood the test of time. Cheaper con-
structions are used by sonne manufacturers even today. The
results are open, squeaky joints that moke a chair dangerously
unfit for use. Ploy safe! Insist on full dowel construction for per-
manent, tight fitting joints that assure lasting satisfaction.

* U. S. Department of Commerce Booklet: "Furniture, Its Selection and Use."

INSIST ON

FULL DOWEL
CONSTRUCTION

FULL DOWEL CONSTRUCTION

means that pre-conditioned hardwood dowels
ore glued in at every important joint. Wherever
possible two dowels are employed. The eight
joints around the chair frame beneath the seat
are the keystones of strength. Insist on chairs
that have these frames joined by dowels to the
legs at every point. Their use assures sound
joints that are everlasting.

. . . TO STEEL DESK USERS

SPKCIFY SIKKS DIJROGREKN

AN OPAQUE CHIP-PROOF FINISH TO MATCH ANY COLOR YOU SELECT

FOR YOUR Clli

':>:^^J^J^0^Mi

IF YOU USE STEEL DESKS

If you use steel desks, you naturally want your chairs
to match in color with a finish that is hard wearing.
Heretofore no wood finish to match steel desks has
been entirely satisfactory. You have had to choose
between a transparent finish that showed the grain of
the wood or a heavy enamel that would quickly chip
and show the bare wood beneath.
Now, with Sikes Durogreen, you can match your desk
perfectly in an opaque color that is chip-proof and
durable. In fact chairs finished in Durogreen look like
metal, with none of the drawbacks of coldness, chipped
finishes and tarnishing that is typical of some metal
chairs.

The chairs illustrated at the left

are fully described on pages 32

and 33.

WHAT IS DUROGREEN?

Durogreen is an opaque lacquer finish that conceals
the grain of the wood. It has a special penetrating
quality that bites deep into the wood, thus making it
chip-proof and wear-resisting. Because it is a close-to-
the-wood finish, it does not have the heavy pigment
that causes the enamel finish to dry out and chip.
Chairs in Durogreen preserve their attractive appear-
ance for years. As the price list indicates, the cost for
this finish is very moderate. It can be supplied on any
Sikes chair and whether you want to match a green
color, gunmetal, or any of the other metal colors, you
will find it easily accomplished in Durogreen.

ALL SIKES CHAIRS ARE AVAILABLE IN DUROGREEN FINISH

CANCELLATION

All orders for upholstered chairs or orders for green stain, Durogreen, other special finishes, or special con-
struction, are not subject to cancellation after work has been started.

stered furniture or furniture built to special order or with special finish or treatment be returned. On all other
returns, 10% of the invoice price will be charged and transportation charges prepaid

SPECIAL CHAIRS AND SPECIAL TREATMENT

We are prepared to design and manufacture special chairs and other special furniture. In writing state
purposes for which the furniture is to be used, the general style, and the approximate quantity.

Chairs carried in regular stock can on occasion be given special treatment. Such alterations as paneling front
legs, and arm supports, fluting, or special upholstery nail treatment, require an extra charge, the amount of
which will be quoted on request.

REGULAR FINISHES

Chairs are regularly supplied in standard finishes to match the stock furniture of the leading commercial
wood office furniture manufacturers. A description of these finishes is given below. Certain special finishes, de-
scribed in this section, are also furnished without extra charge.

OAK

OAK No. 9. A varnish finish of light golden color, sometimes referred to as "office oak." This is the standard
color for oak and matches the oak color of leading desk and table manufacturers. This is supplied on
all oak pieces unless otherwise specified. There is no extra charge for this finish. Code Word: Pipkin.

OAK No. 5. Weathered Oak: A dark waxed finish, showing the open pores of the wood. There is no extra
charge for this finish.

OAK No. 6. Early English Oak: A varnish finish, with the pores of the wood filled; considerably darker than
No. 5. There is no extra charge for this finish.

OAK No. 7. Household Oak: A dark brown varnish finish, a few shades darker than the regular light office
oak. There is no extra charge for this finish. Code Word: Pitch

OAK No. 12. Fumed Oak: An acid-burn, fumed oak, waxed finish, of medium brown color. There is no extra
charge for this finish. Code Word: Pith.

OAK No. 22. School Brown Oak: A varnish finish of medium brown color standardized by the National
School Supply Association. There is no extra charge for this finish.

MAHOGANY

MAHOGANY No. 10. A finish of medium red color. This is our standard mahogany color and matches that of
the leading desk and table manufacturers. For imitation mahogany we use a varnish finish; for genuine
mahogany, a lacquer finish. There is no extra charge for these finishes.

MAHOGANY No. 8. Adam Brown: A blend of deep red and brown, somewhat suggestive of age. A lacquer
finish is used for the genuine mahogany, and a varnish for the imitation mahogany. There is no extra
charge for these finishes.

—16—

WALNUT

WALNUT No. 11-13. A finish of medium brown color. This is our standard walnut color, applying to both
walnut and birch chairs, and matches that of the leading desk and table manufacturers. For genuine
walnut, a lacquer finish is used; for imitation walnut, a varnish finish is used. There is no extra charge
I for these finishes.

ANTIQUE MAPLE

Furniture regularly suppUed in imitation mahogany and imitation walnut finishes can also be suppUed in Antique
Maple finish at an extra charge of $1.50 per chair, fist.

FINISHES TO MATCH STEEL FURNITURE

Chairs can be supplied in green and other color finishes to match the regular colors of each of the steel furniture
manufacturers. Two types of finishes are supplied:

A. Durogreen Finish. This is an opaque lacquer finish, conceaHng the grain of the wood and is
supplied in various shades of green as well as in other colors. While it has the same appearance as enamel
finishes, it is chip-proof and wear resisting (see catalog page 68). Chairs ordered to match metal desks
are regularly supplied in this finish. In ordering specify the manufacturer whose product is to be matched
and his finish number. Approximately one week is required for this finish.

B. Green Stain Finish. This is an acid burn lacquer finish with permanent stain that penetrates the
grain of the wood. It is supplied on oak only. It is transparent, revealing the grain. In ordering specify
the manufacturer whose product is to be matched and his finish number. Approximately one week is
required for this finish.

SPECIAL FINISHES

An extra charge of $2.00 per chair, full list, is made for all finishes requiring a special selection of wood, as Silver
Grey on Oak, Natural or Light Antique Oak, or Natural Mahogany.

For special colors, other than standard colors of the leading wood desk and table manufacturers, there is an addi-
tional charge of $1.50 per chair, fuU Hst. For light finishes that require extreme bleaching of the wood,
there are extra charges that will be quoted on request.

SHIPPING WEIGHTS AND PACKING METHODS

The last column of the price list indicates the approximate shipping weight for each piece. Unless otherwise indi-
cated this includes the weight of cartons. Where the weight is followed by the figure 2, the weight is
that of two chairs.

Patterns whose prices are marked with an asterisk (*) are regularly shipped wrapped only. On all but the armless
leg chair and the typewriter chairs, the extra charge for crating is $1.00 per chair, full list. On the arm-
less leg chair and typewriter chairs the extra charge is 50c per chair Hst provided they are shipped in
quantities of two or more at one time,

UPHOLSTERING

Upholstered chairs may be purchased in any one of three grades of upholstery leathers. The lowest priced uphol-
stered chairs can also be purchased in a fourth grade. The four grades are as follows:

GRADE A — Machine Buffed: All leathers marked "Grade A'* are machine buffed. Chairs upholstered in this
grade take the price shown in the "Grade A" column of the price list. This leather is the first cut from
the steerhide after a 1/64'^ slice has been removed from the grain surface. It is not quite as pliable nor
fine as the top grain leathers, but is durable and is suitable for use on the lower priced grades of
upholstered chairs.

GRADE B— Corrected Top Grain (Century, Peerless Antique, Imperial Antique) : All leathers marked
"Grade B" are corrected top grain, in a variety of finishes. Chairs upholstered in this grade take the
price shown in the "Grade B" column of the price list. This grade is secured from the top of the hide, after

—17—

the removal of occasional surface blemishes. It is soft, warm, and in other respects weU suited to the
better grades of upholstered chairs.

GRADE C— Full Top Grain (Vealskin Finish, Morocco Grain Finish): All leathers marked "Grade C" are
full top gram, in a variety of finishes designated as Vealskin Finish and Morocco Grain Finish. Chairs
upholstered in this grade take the price shown in the **Grade C" column of the price list. Full top grain
leathers are obtained from the top surface of perfect steerhides, free from any scratches or blemishes
of any kind. Leathers of this grade are the finest obtainable, and are recommended for use on the highest
grades of upholstered chairs, lounge chairs, and davenports.

GRADE X— Luxor Leather. Leathers of this grade are less pliable or durable than those of Grade A, machine
buff. 1 hey are a selection of deep buff made from domestic cow hides. They are offered only for the lower
?"^f ^Pholstered chairs that are priced in this grade. Chairs not priced in this grade cannot be supplied
in It. While we consider Luxor leathers serviceable, we do not guarantee it against cracking and will not
replace m.

OTHER SPECIAL LEATHERS. BECAUSE OF EXCESSIVE WASTE IN CUTTING, THERE IS AN
EXTRA CHARGE FOR ANY LEATHER NOT SHOWN IN THE SIKES SAMPLE BOOK. THIS EXTRA
CHARGE IS FIVE PER CENT OF THE VALUE OF THE CHAIR IN THE GRADE SELECTED.

Cushions. Lounge Chairs and Davenports.

All cushions for lounge chairs and davenports are regularly spring filled. Down fiUed cushions are sup-
plied at an additional list charge of $12.00 per cushion.

Attached Down Cushions. As indicated in the catalog many of the finer executive chairs have loose down
tilled cushions on spring foundations. If preferred, the upholstery can be altered to make these down
cushions attached to the seat. The No. 1809AD of Catalog Page 61 illustrates this feature. This is
designated by the symbol "AD" following the pattern number and is supplied without extra charge
over the cost of loose down cushion seats.

Bank of England and General UtUity Chau- Cushions. Where cushion seats are shown on Bank of England
and General Utihty chairs the cushion interiors are of curled hair, long drawings, impregnated in pure
Latex. Cushions of this construction are more resilient and comfortable than those containing the old
style hair pad. These cushions are non-reversible. Prices for reversible cushions will be quoted on
application.

Knife Edge Cushions. If desired a cushion of approximately 1J4' thickness with single welt, non-reversible,
can be supplied on wood saddle seat chairs. They are available in two sizes and are not fitted around the
arm supports.

Small size for armless chairs $6.50 each full list

Large size for arm chairs $7.60 each full list

Leather is machine buff of the customer's selection. If the cushions are desired notched to fit the arm
supports, add $1.00 per cushion full list.

Pad Leather Seats. All revolving chairs with perforated leather seats over cane can be furnished with pad
leather seats at no extra charge.

Fabrics. Chairs may be upholstered in two grades of fabrics:

Grade X— Autocord. All chairs upholstered in Autocord fabrics take the prices shown in the "Grade
X" column of the price list. Fabrics of this grade are closely woven, and allow one to move about easi-
ly in the chair. They are the type used in many of the better motor cars, and are extremely hard
wearing. They are available in brown, red, and green.

Grade B— Gros Point. Chairs upholstered in Gros Point fabrics take the prices shown in the "Grade B"
column of the price list. These fabrics, made by The L. C. Chase Co., are 100% mohair and will compare
favorably with top grain leather in wearing quality. They have a smooth finish and attractive texture.
They are available in six colors.

Elimination of Upholstery Nails on Outside Backs. On numerous leather upholstered chairs in the cata-
log, welts replace upholstery nails. On these patterns the use of upholstery nails is confined to the out-
side of the back. If nails are to be omitted here also, extra work is involved in sewing the back the
charge for which is $2.00 per chair, full list.

SIKES FLOTILT CHAIR CONTROL (See catalog Page 66)

The Sikes Flotilt Chair Control is standard equipment on all except posture chairs. This mechanism is
noiseless, never requires lubrication, and eliminates all danger of toppling over backwards due to
breaking springs. The tilting action is mounted entirely in rubber that is protected against deteriora-
tion. The swivel action is self-lubricating.

POSTURE TYPIST CHAIR MECHANISMS

All posture chairs, Catalog Pages 48 to 58 inclusive, are equipped with Sikes self-lubricating swivel mechanisms.
Patterns whose numbers are followed by the symbol " — 3" are regularly equipped with the patented
Fixed-Floating mechanism described on Catalog Pages 50 and 55. With the exception of patterns on
Page 58, all posture chair patterns may be supplied with the Fixed-Floating mechanism at an additional
charge of $1.00 per chair. All posture chairs provide hand adjustments for seat height, back height,
back pitch, and back spring tension.

FIVE POINT PROTECTION (See Catalog Pages 64 and 65)

Five Point Protection comprises a series of devices to protect swivel chairs, desks, and floors against damage, fit
protects both chairs and desks against spUntering at their most vulnerable parts. It keeps furniture look-
